Ambassador Jeroen Verheul: ‘Lack of individual and institutional accountability is weakness in the Justice Law and Order Sector’

Last week, development partners together with the Government of Uganda reviewed progress in the Justice, Law and Order Sector.

Jeroen Verheul, representing the Development Partners Group, said in his speech (see downloads) that though there was significant progress made in enhancing access to justice, as police, prosecution, courts and prisons are now being operational throughout the country, the biggest challenge is the lack of institutional and individual accountability in the JLOS, including impunity of human rights violations. It was the first time development partners made a joint assessment of progress in the JLOS (see downloads), using a colour code of good (green), sufficient (yellow) or insufficient (red) progress.
